Gomel is the regional center, one of the largest cities in Belarus. It was founded in 1142.
The city is situated in the south-east of the republic, 300 km from the capital Minsk. Gomel is located in the picturesque territory of Belarusian Polesye. River Sozh is one of the biggest Belarusian rivers flows through the city. The population is about 500 000 people (the second largest city after Minsk).
In the nearby areas, there are deep forests and clear lakes. A lot of birds and wild animals live in the forests around the city. Lakes and rivers are home for fish and ducks.
As for cultural life there are such institution as College of Arts, Painting gallery, 9 children musical schools and schools of art, a number of centers and palaces of culture, libraries.
There are three theatres (regional Drama theatre, puppet theatre, Gomel city youth theatre), six cinema halls, the circus, some museums, architectural monuments of 18-19 centuries, Rumyantsev and Paskevich's palace and park. Numerous exhibitions are organised in Gomel. Gomel is important industrial, scienntofic and cultural centre of the Republic of Belarus with lots of factories, plants, schools, universities, hospitals, monuments, exhibition centres, theatres and museums.
The city with its beautiful parks, historical monuments, tourist attractions and picturesque countryside is really worth visiting.
